Most of the golfers in the LPGA Championship spent the last three weeks honing their game in tournaments or hitting thousands of balls on the practice range. Lorena Ochoa wasn't one of them. She took a vacation. Ochoa last played in a competitive round of golf on May 17, when she shot a 73 to finish tied for 19th in the Sybase Classic. The top-ranked player in the world then took a few days off before working for about a week with longtime teacher Rafael Alarcon in Guadalajara. After that, she spent a week in Mexico City promoting tourism for her native country. |

Fill the blank: Tiger Woods giving Charles Barkley a golf lesson is like _______________. Michelangelo teaching a fourth-grade art class? Emeril heating up a can of Chef Boyardee? Herbert Warren Wind helping me write a golf column? Well, on Tuesday, Barkley, owner of one of the game's most ugly swings, got some driving-range tips from Woods, who owns one of the smoothest. Appearing on Dan Patrick's radio show Wednesday morning (and sounding like the show was way too early for him), Barkley said that he's been working on his game with Woods and instructor Hank Haney. The garrulous Barkley was surprisingly circumspect about it though. |

The idea was for Phil Mickelson to return to a routine as best as possible in his world now shaken with fear. It has been three turbulent weeks since he announced his wife, Amy, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Mickelson has always felt like he was in control, even if his golf at times suggested otherwise. Now he feels helpless. "I've never been this emotional, where if I'm driving alone or what have you, I'll just start crying," he said Wednesday at the St. Jude Classic, his eyes tinged with streaks of pink, his voice no longer steady and sure. "We're scared, yeah," he said. "I think a lot of it is the unknown." |

The U.S. Open remains the only major that has an 18-hole playoff, and USGA executive director David Fay said that's not about to change. "We are doggedly determined to go 18 holes," he said. It was worth it last year at Torrey Pines, one of the most compelling rounds of the year. Tiger Woods, on a wounded knee, built a lead, blew a lead, had to birdie the 18th to force overtime and won on the 19th hole over Rocco Mediate. Some ticket gates were not manned, leading to some 30,000 fans trying to follow two players. The atmosphere was over the top. Just don't get the idea that the USGA makes a mint out of the extra day. Quite the opposite. |

Few locations, golf related or otherwise, can stir the soul like Pebble Beach Golf Club on the Monterey Peninsula. The famed layout is a favorite destination of golfers and non-golfers who feel a calling to walk the hallowed grounds. How would you like the responsibility of making sure the visit meets those expectations? PGA.com talked with the man who carries that "burden" with a smile, PGA Head Professional Chuck Dunbar. |
